Today, September 25, 2025 – A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Venezuela, sending tremors across several states and into neighboring Colombia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Details of the Quake
The USGS reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 15 miles (24 km) east-northeast of Mene Grande in Zulia state, at a shallow depth of approximately 5 miles (7.8 km). The shallow depth made the tremor strongly felt across the region, with residents reporting intense shaking that lasted several seconds.
Local seismic agencies also recorded three smaller aftershocks, measuring 5.4, 3.9, and 3.8 magnitudes, striking within hours of the initial quake. These aftershocks were felt in the states of Zulia and Barinas, keeping residents on high alert.

Reactions and Safety Measures
Authorities confirmed that no immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been received so far. However, precautionary measures were taken as buildings in affected cities were evacuated.
Residents shared images and videos on social media showing people rushing into the streets, while emergency teams remain on standby to assess potential structural damage.
Government Response
Venezuela’s Communications Minister, Freddy Ñáñez, acknowledged the smaller quakes in an early statement but did not mention the 6.2-magnitude tremor, which raised concerns among citizens seeking official updates.
Regional Impact
The quake’s shockwaves were felt as far as western Colombia, prompting local authorities to issue alerts and monitor potential aftershocks.
Stay Prepared
Seismologists urge residents to remain cautious as aftershocks are common following a major quake of this magnitude. People are advised to stay away from damaged structures and to keep emergency kits ready.
